Decoding the Ingredient List

Decoding the Ingredient List

You have been introduced to the fascinating world of skincare ingredients, but how do you put that knowledge to use when you're staring at a lengthy ingredient list on a product label? This is where decoding the ingredient list comes in.

Firstly, it's essential to know that ingredients are listed in descending order of concentration. This means the first ingredient listed makes up the largest part of the product, and so on. However, this rule changes when the ingredients are listed in concentrations of 1% or less - these can be listed in any order.

Active Ingredients: These are usually highlighted separately on the product label, and they directly address the claims of the product. If you're purchasing an anti-aging cream, for example, you should see active ingredients like retinol or peptides.

Base Ingredients: These form the base of the product and are often listed first. Water is a common first ingredient in many skincare products.

Emollients and Humectants: These are often found in moisturizers and serums. They help hydrate the skin and lock in moisture. Glycerin, hyaluronic acid, and oils like jojoba and argan oil are examples.

Preservatives, Fragrances, and Colorants: These are usually listed towards the end and in smaller amounts. If you're sensitive to fragrances, look for products labeled 'fragrance-free' or 'unscented'.

Understanding skincare ingredients isn't just about knowing what goes onto your skin; it's about making empowered decisions for your skin health. Stay tuned for more in-depth discussions on skincare ingredients in our next posts.
