Conditioners for Curly Hair
General Recipe:
-
Cationic Surfactants (5-10%): These work as conditioning agents and help to reduce frizz and increase smoothness. Examples are Behentrimonium Methosulfate, Cetrimonium Chloride, or Stearamidopropyl Dimethylamine.
-
Emollients (3-10%): These could be oils or butters such as Shea Butter, Jojoba Oil, or Coconut Oil. These help to provide additional moisture and shine to the hair.
-
Humectants (2-7%): Substances such as Glycerin, Panthenol, or Honey help to attract and hold moisture in the hair.
-
Proteins (0.5-5%): Hydrolyzed Silk Protein or Keratin Protein can help to strengthen the hair and improve its texture.
-
Slip Agents (1-5%): These include ingredients like Marshmallow Root Extract or Slippery Elm Bark Extract, which can help detangle curls and reduce breakage.
-
Preservatives (0.5-1.5%): Phenoxyethanol, Sodium Benzoate, or Potassium Sorbate to prevent microbial growth.
-
Thickeners (0.2-1%): Ingredients such as Xanthan Gum or Hydroxyethylcellulose can be used to increase the viscosity of the conditioner.
-
Fragrance/Essential Oils (0.2-1%): These are added for scent and additional beneficial properties for the hair and scalp.
-
pH Adjusters (0.1-0.5%): Citric Acid or Lactic Acid to keep the product at a slightly acidic pH, which is beneficial for hair.
-
Deionized Water (to 100%): The remaining percentage is typically water.
These conditioners are designed to enhance curls and reduce frizz. They are often more moisturizing than other types.
