Kaolin Clay Masks
General Recipe:
-
Water (40-60%): The main solvent in your formula.
-
Kaolin Clay (30-50%): This is the key active ingredient that will give your mask its main properties.
-
Emulsifier (2-6%): An emulsifier such as cetearyl alcohol or glyceryl stearate is needed to help the clay mix evenly with the water.
-
Humectant (5-10%): You can use a humectant like glycerin to help the skin retain moisture.
-
Thickener (0.5-2%): A thickening agent like xanthan gum can be used to give your mask a thicker, creamier consistency.
-
Preservatives (0.5-1.5%): A broad-spectrum preservative like phenoxyethanol is necessary to prevent microbial growth and extend the product's shelf life.
-
Additional Actives (0.1-5%): Additional beneficial ingredients such as soothing allantoin, skin-brightening niacinamide, or antioxidant green tea extract can be included.
Kaolin clay comes in a few different types. White kaolin clay is the gentlest and suitable for sensitive and dry skin. It helps to gently exfoliate the skin without causing dryness or irritation. Red kaolin clay is more suitable for oily skin, as it has a stronger oil-absorbing capacity.
