Sulfate-Free Shampoo

General Recipe:

1. Primary Surfactants (10-15%): Choose a sulfate-free surfactant like Sodium Lauryl Sulfoacetate (SLSa), Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate (SCI), or Cocamidopropyl Betaine. These will be responsible for cleaning the hair and scalp.

2. Secondary Surfactants (2-7%): They help to boost foam and enhance the cleaning power. Cocamidopropyl Hydroxysultaine is a mild secondary surfactant that is often used in sulfate-free formulas.

3. Conditioning Agents (2-7%): These add moisture and softness to the hair. You can use ingredients like Cetyl Alcohol or Behentrimonium Methosulfate.

4. Emollients (1-3%): Ingredients like Panthenol (Provitamin B5) or oils (like Argan oil) can help to moisturize and smooth the hair.

5. Thickening Agents (0.5-2%): Ingredients like Xanthan Gum or Hydroxyethylcellulose can be used to adjust the viscosity of the shampoo.

6. pH Adjusters (0.1-1%): Ingredients like Citric Acid or Sodium Hydroxide can be used to balance the pH of the shampoo. A pH of around 5-6 is generally suitable for shampoos.

7. Preservatives (0.5-1.5%): Ingredients such as Phenoxyethanol, Sodium Benzoate, or Potassium Sorbate are used to prevent microbial growth in the shampoo.

8. Fragrance (0.5-2%): Essential oils or fragrance oils can be used to add a desired scent to the shampoo.

9. Water (to 100%): The remaining percentage of the formula is water, which is used as a solvent.
