Baby Shampoos
General Recipe:
-
Mild Surfactants (10-15%): This can be a combination of several gentle surfactants to provide the cleansing properties of the shampoo. Examples are Decyl Glucoside, Cocamidopropyl Betaine, or Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate. These surfactants are mild on the skin and eyes.
-
Thickening Agents (0.5-2%): To give the product more viscosity. Xanthan Gum or Hydroxyethylcellulose are commonly used thickeners.
-
Conditioning Agents (1-2%): These are to help detangle and smooth the hair. Examples are Panthenol, Guar Hydroxypropyltrimonium Chloride, or a silicone like Dimethicone.
-
Humectants (3-5%): These help to moisturize and soften the skin and hair. Glycerin is a commonly used humectant in baby shampoos.
-
Preservatives (0.5-1%): This is important to prevent microbial growth in the product. Examples are Phenoxyethanol or Ethylhexylglycerin.
-
Fragrance (0.1-0.3%): Can be added to give the product a pleasant smell. However, for baby products, fragrance is often minimal or even omitted, as it can cause skin irritation.
-
Deionized Water (up to 100%): The remaining percentage is typically water to make up the rest of the product.
These shampoos are formulated to be gentle on a baby's sensitive skin and eyes.
