Balancing Shampoo

General Recipe:

  1. Primary Surfactants (10-15%): Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) and Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES) are commonly used, but milder alternatives like Cocamidopropyl Betaine or Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate could be used for a more balanced shampoo.

  2. Secondary Surfactants (2-7%): These help to enhance the lather and feel of the shampoo. Cocamidopropyl Betaine is commonly used.

  3. Humectants (1-5%): Glycerin, sorbitol, or other humectants can help to attract and hold moisture in the hair.

  4. pH Adjusters (1-2%): A balanced shampoo typically has a pH close to the natural pH of the scalp, which is slightly acidic (around 5.5). Citric Acid or other suitable agents could be used to adjust the pH.

  5. Conditioning Agents (1-5%): Quaternary ammonium compounds (quats) such as cetrimonium chloride can provide conditioning benefits.

  6. Thickening Agents (0.5-2%): Ingredients such as Sodium Chloride or Xanthan Gum can be used to adjust the viscosity of the shampoo.

  7. Preservatives (0.5-2%): Phenoxyethanol, Ethylhexylglycerin, or other suitable preservatives to prevent microbial growth in the product.

  8. Water (to 100%): The remaining portion of the shampoo is typically water.

Additional ingredients such as fragrance, color, or botanical extracts might be added to enhance the product's appeal and benefits. These shampoos aim to balance oil production on the scalp, making them a good choice for people with normal to oily hair.
