Color-Protecting Conditioner
General Recipe:
-
Cationic Surfactants (5-10%): Such as Behentrimonium Methosulfate, Cetrimonium Chloride, or Stearamidopropyl Dimethylamine. These ingredients work as conditioning agents and help to smooth the hair cuticle.
-

-
UV Filters (2-5%): Ingredients like Ethylhexyl Methoxycinnamate, Benzophenone-4 or -3, Butyl Methoxydibenzoylmethane help to protect the hair color from UV damage.
-
Antioxidants (0.1-1%): Such as Vitamin E (Tocopherol) to provide protection against oxidative damage.
-
Protein (0.5-5%): Hydrolyzed wheat protein or silk protein can be included to strengthen the hair and improve its texture.
-
Humectants (1-5%): Ingredients like Glycerin or Panthenol help to attract and hold moisture in the hair.
-
Preservatives (0.5-1%): Phenoxyethanol, Sodium Benzoate, or Potassium Sorbate to prevent microbial growth.
-
Thickeners (0.2-1%): Xanthan Gum or Hydroxyethylcellulose can be used to increase the viscosity of the conditioner.
-
Fragrance/ Essential Oils (0.2-1%): For scent and additional beneficial properties for the hair and scalp.
-
pH Adjusters (0.1-0.5%): Citric Acid or Lactic Acid to maintain the product at a hair-friendly pH, generally slightly acidic to help seal the hair cuticle.
-
Deionized Water (to 100%): The remaining percentage is typically water.
These conditioners are made to lock in color and prevent color-treated hair from fading.
